Editorial Reviews
Undeniably one of the best small bands in jazz history, the Miles Davis Quintet of the mid-1950s featured an all-star line-up of Miles Davis (trumpet), John Coltrane (tenor sax), Red Garland (piano), Paul Chambers (bass) and Philly Joe Jones (drums). Their 1960 album Workin' is released as part of the Original Jazz Classics Series. The LP is pressed on 180-gram vinyl at RTI with all-analog mastering from the original tapes by Kevin Gray at Cohearent Audio and presented in a tip-on jacket.

Very clean pressing. No surface noise and completely flat. Jacket is high quality tip-on and very stout cardboard (Like stiffest jacket I've prolly ever held). Came in a mofi style Craft Recordings sleeve, however it had a TON of cardboard dust on the record when I took it out of the sleeve so I selected to put it in a new/fresh Hudson Hi-Fi sleeve after running it through my 3 stage cleaning process. Sounds excellent and will get many many play throughs!! If you don't want to spend a ton and want a really nice pricing, I definately recommend this one.

Any who, the original jazz classic series is an incredible value for the quality of mastering, pressing, and presentation/materials of sleeve. Buy them while you can for under $40, only if you see the value in this great series.

Cover: - heavy card well made, good clear images & typography
Liner: - Craft archival inner sleeve
Vinyl: - flat silent, very low noise floor, no pressing defects, plays well with no issues
5* recording, despite being mono there is a pot of space & air around the instruments. This is aided by the extreme clarity of the recording which has excellent projection. Such is the quality of this recording that it is easier to place the instruments than on some stereo recordings. Equal to a Blue Note Tone Poet recording.
• Clarity: - Outstanding
• Channel separation: - mono
• Channel balance: - mono
• Sound Stage: - excellent projection, deep spacious between speakers, airy
• Distortion: - non audible
• Compression: - excellent dynamic & frequency range
• Atmosphere: - warm, relaxed, confident, despite the extreme clarity & detail not cold or clinical
• Bass – low frequencies: - the drums & acoustic bass are both clearly audible, the full drum kit is audible. Both instruments have good tone, the bass is rich & warm but having punch & power in the solos
• Treble – high frequencies: - the horns & the piano are well balanced neither dominating. The piano tone is excellent whilst the horns are crisp & clear. The notes hang and decay well giving a sense of space
• Vocals: - none
I have not set out to write reviews of the music content as “beauty is in the ears of the listener”. These reviews are about the quality (or not) of the recorded sound. To read about how the reviews are done please see my profile.
As a general rule of thumb recordings from the 1960’s, 70’s and 80’s are nearly always better on the original vinyl. Remasters often fail to please as it’s just not possible to make a silk purse from a sows ear, i.e. the original recording lacks the necessary detail to be processed digitally and show an audible improvement. Indeed such processing can make the sound worse.
Modern recordings which have been processed digitally from start to finish can be as good as vinyl. CD’s are often unfairly criticised for being poor quality. This is not the case, it is the original recording or the process which is to blame. Modern “remasters” can both enhance and degrade a recording. The statement GIGO (Garbage In Garbage Out) is the limiting factor. Ignore this at your cost.
