Editorial Reviews
The War On Drugs announce their fourth full-length album, A Deeper Understanding. A Deeper Understanding is the band’s first album since 2014’s universally acclaimed Lost In The Dream, and their debut album with Atlantic. Following the Record Store Day release of the 11-minute “Thinking of a Place,” The War On Drugs present the album’s lead single, “Holding On.”For much of the three and a half year period since the release of Lost In The Dream, The War On Drugs’ frontman, Adam Granduciel, led the charge for his Philadelphia-based sextet as he holed up in studios in New York and Los Angeles to write, record, edit, and tinker—but, above all, to busy himself in work. Teaming up with engineer Shawn Everett (Alabama Shakes, Weezer), Granduciel challenged the notion of what it means to create a fully realized piece of music in today’s modern landscape. Calling on his bandmates – bassist Dave Hartley, keyboarding Robbie Bennett, drummer Charlie Hall and multi-instrumentalists Anthony LaMarca and Jon Natchez -- continuously throughout the process, the result is a “band record” in the noblest sense, featuring collaboration, coordination, and confidence at every turn. Through those years of relocation, the revisiting and reexamining of endless hours of recordings, unbridled exploration and exuberance, Granduciel’s gritty love of his craft succeeded in pushing the band to great heights.

About a few weeks ago QOTSA released their newest album Villains, on this same day A Deeper Understanding also came out if I recall so I had already taken note of it. Then I started to read the reviews and hear great things about it so I gave it a shot having not listened to any The War on Drugs before. Well I was very impressed. The album flows very well. The guitar work is some of the best I have heard in recent time and the album is simply beautiful. Its a great album for just chilling, putting yourself in a more somber mood, or even listening to as you sleep though it can get pretty electric at times with the amazing guitar solos. The album is nearly great for any mood or moment. I have nothing but high praise for this album and it is my pick for album of the year. It for me has surpassed all of those other albums I listed along with so many more and it in ways helps that I'm in a state right now where I am really connecting to what the songs are about so the album itself has a special place in my heart, but irregardless of that, the album is still a masterpiece. All 10 songs are great, but some of the ones that have really stood out to me are Pain, Holding On, Strangest Thing, and the 11 minute doozy Thinking of a Place which is in my opinion the best song on the album. I highly recommend this album to anyone even if its not your style. There is nothing more I can say. This album is a masterpiece.
For anyone interested, I will leave a few thoughts on the vinyl record itself and the quality of it. Well, it sounds fantastic. It doesn't sound muddied coming through the speakers or fuzzy. Its loud, but sounds clear. I haven't noticed a single skip or loop as well. Overall, my vinyl copy of this album is top notch and was definitely worth the purchase. It sounds much better than streaming which is how I normally listen to it and comes off as being a bit more dynamic. There was for sure new things I hadn't heard while listening to it digitally. So yeah, the vinyl version of this album seems to be a solid pressing, but with vinyl you can never be sure so buy at your own risk. If you get the album on vinyl, I hope your sounds as great as mine. Enjoy!
There are many highlights on the album with my personal favourites Holding On and Thinking of a Place (it was most amusing watching them live recently as the crowd began to applaud them when they thought this song had ended only to realise the fade out wasn't the end and it was about to build towards its soaring crescendo).
If you get the chance TWOD are a band you absolutely must see live. Their music lends itself well to the jamming-session vibe; but more importantly, they are superb musicians who have crafted and perfected their sound, and the live setting really showcases them at their absolute best.
A Deeper Understanding is a fantastic record and is highly recommended.

Es un disco imprescindible. Lo recomiendo para defender ese espíritu qué a veces sentimos débil o ausente en nuestro día a día.
