Description:

Sparks has announced the upcoming release of their 26th studio album, The Girl Is Crying in Her Latte, marking the duo’s return to Island Records.

The duo, brothers Ron and Russell Mael, initially gained prominence with their groundbreaking album, Kimono My House, in 1974. Released on Island, the album was followed by two more records, Propaganda and 1975’s Indiscreet. Nearly 50 years after their breakthrough on the label, The Girl Is Crying in Her Latte signifies the band’s reunion with Island Records.

“Funny how things work!” Russell Mael said in a statement, reminiscing about the memorable 1970s Island Records era that cemented Sparks’ relationship with the UK and expanded their global audience. He expressed excitement at re-signing with Island Records for their latest album, which he believes is as bold and uncompromising as their earlier work.

Louis Bloom, president of Island, also commented on Sparks’ return to the label, highlighting the group’s originality, creativity, and enduring success. He praised the duo’s new album, The Girl Is Crying in Her Latte, as a pop masterpiece that sounds uniquely like Sparks.

Sparks’ popularity has surged recently, due in part to their work on the 2021 musical romantic drama Annette and the career-spanning 2021 documentary The Sparks Brothers. Directed by Edgar Wright, the documentary featured commentary from renowned fans such as Beck, Jason Schwartzmann, Jack Antonoff, Todd Rundgren, Giorgio Moroder, Flea, and the Go-Go’s Jane Wiedlin, among others.
